Other things to note

Set in a private valley in the heart of the Northumberland countryside, the Mill is uniquely positioned to be a secluded retreat yet highly accessible by road. The wider site is only shared with ourselves (Mill Cottage) and the small Threshing Barn (holiday let), both tucked away in their own grounds. There are no other neighbours in site. Steeped in history and surrounded by meadows and pasture, we are positioned close to the market towns of Hexham and Corbridge with numerous cafes, shops and events. It is also a perfect base for exploring Northumberland and the wider area including the Lake District (50 mins), Kielder Forest with its Dark Skies status (35 mins), the Scottish Borders, the rugged Northumberland coast (40 minutes) and for those visitors from further afield the culture and shopping attractions of Newcastle/Gateshead (30 mins).

If relaxing is your thing then the large gardens, woodlands and streams are the perfect backdrop to lazy days, while numerous local attractions and villages provide for the ideal ‘take-it-easy and explore’ approach.

Hexham is home to one of the finest Abbeys in the UK, with open access and tours available. A well equipped leisure centre boasts 4 swimming pools, bowling alley, health classes and soft play.

Activities

Walking – The Mill is a great base for walking being close to Hadrian’s Wall (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and directly on the St Oswald’s Way. Not to mention numerous places a short drive away like the Simonside Hills.

Cycling – A real cyclists haven – we are on the route of the Cyclone road races so there is no end to the short and long routes that can be taken – with the infamous ‘Ryals’ a short distance away to test those legs. And for mountain bikers we have Kielder Forest with its 8 routes catering for all levels (including family rides), Whinlatter Forest in the Lakes as well as all of the famous 7 Stanes network with Newcastleton, Innerleithen and Glentress all within reach.

Golf – The excellent Matfen Hall is 5 minutes away and a short drive to the Championship courses at Close House (British Masters) and Slaley Hall, not to mention a raft of excellent courses in the Scottish Borders and along the Northumbrian coast. The owner Rob was a professional golfer in years gone by so always happy to recommend some good places to play.

Fishing – This can be arranged on the private Hallington Reservoir close by or at one of several other fisheries in the area. River fishing on the North Tyne and other local rivers can also be arranged.

Shooting – Clay pigeon and other types of shooting can be arranged locally, please ask for details.

Climbing – The Lake District peaks beckon but also the plethora of Northumberland crags dotted around the county. Indoor climbing can be experienced at Newburn Park (30 mins).

Spa days – Matfen Hall Country Hotel and Golf Course is just up the road and boasts an Aqua Vitae Spa with everything you need to unwind and relax.
